WHAT ARE CHROMIUM STEELS / ALLOY STEELS?

Chromium Steels are types of steels with which iron can be alloyed with Chromium. Often, this term is used interchangeably with stainless steel as chromium is the most common alloying element used in stainless steel grades for its increase in corrosion resistance. However, stainless steel is typically classified as so when the Chromium content of the item is greater than 10.5%. This results in certain chromium steels not falling under the category of stainless steel such as 9CR-1Mo which only has 9% Chromium.

f-11-9CR-1MO

9CR-1MO (UNS S50400)

9CR-1Mo is a martensitic steel that contains 9% Chromium and 1% Molybdenum that is commonly used in the hardened and tempered condition. 9CR-1MO is often referred to as a stainless steel but it does not meet the requirements of having a minimum of 10.5% Chromium to qualify as one.

13CR – 420 MODIFIED (UNS S42000)

13CR-420 Mod is a martensitic stainless steel that is used in the hardened and tempered condition. It is used in both standard and CO2 environments as its corrosion resistance is similar to 410 steel but its increased strength and toughness make it a good material for completion equipment and pressure containing members.

SUPER 13-CR

Super 13-CR is a martensitic stainless steel developed from the standard 13 CR grade and offers enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance as compared to the standard 13 CR grade. The low carbon content improves weldability while maintaining the martensitic microstructure.
